The Handsome Teacher

“Do you really think Miss Morris was dating someone at the school?” asked Amy as they walked into the hallway.

“It sounds like it,” said Heather. “And like I said before, this finally gives us a potential motive for her murder. Sadly, many people murder for love.”

“Who do you think she was seeing?” Amy asked, rubbing her chin.

“I do wonder why the couple was so secretive,” said Heather. “I wonder what the rules for dating a coworker are here.”

“When I went to school, it wasn’t very strict. I know my French teacher was dating my mean history teacher. I never knew what she saw in him.”

“If there’s not a rule against teachers dating, then there must be another reason why Miss Morris was so secretive. Could it be that the other teacher was married? Were they having an affair?”

“There is another possibility,” said Amy. “I don’t like the way Miss Holly kept pointing out Miss Morris’s age like she was ancient. She probably thought we were old ladies too.”

“Perish the thought,” Heather teased.

“But Miss Morris does seem a little older than the male teachers at the school. Maybe they were keeping it a secret because they found the age difference embarrassing.”

“You could be on to something,” Heather agreed. “But I guess the only way to determine it is to start talking with the male teachers. Who do you think we should start with first?”

“Well, if I were going to have an affair – and I’m not really saying I am because I am madly in love with Jamie – but for this example, if I had to pick – well, Mr. Grant is pretty darn attractive. Wavy hair. Broad shoulders.”

“Let’s go talk to him,” said Heather.

“Yes. Let’s,” Amy said with a wink.

They continued down the hall until they reached Mr. Grant’s classroom. His room was covered with maps and flags. He looked up from the pile of papers he was marking with a red pen and waved.

“I was just trying to be productive in the face of all this sorrow,” he said. “I like to give a quiz the first day and last day of class with the same questions so students can see how much they’ve learned throughout the year.”

“Do you mind if we ask you some more questions?” asked Heather.

“Not at all,” he said, though his charming smile didn’t reach his eyes as he invited them to sit down. “But I think I really did tell you everything I knew last night.”

“We’ve found out some more information, and we were hoping you might be able to add to it,” said Heather.

“What sort of information?” he asked, trying to sound casual.

“About the victim,” said Heather, matching his tone.

“Yeah,” said Amy. “How well did you know Miss Morris?”

“Well, we’ve worked together for several years. We’d always chat during lunch. She was a very nice lady. She made cookies for us at Christmas. I jumpstarted her car for her before.”

“Is that all you ever jumpstarted?” asked Amy.

“Excuse me?” asked Mr. Grant.
