The Handsome Teacher
âDo you really think Miss Morris was dating someone at the school?â asked Amy as they walked into the hallway.
âIt sounds like it,â said Heather. âAnd like I said before, this finally gives us a potential motive for her murder. Sadly, many people murder for love.â
âWho do you think she was seeing?â Amy asked, rubbing her chin.
âI do wonder why the couple was so secretive,â said Heather. âI wonder what the rules for dating a coworker are here.â
âWhen I went to school, it wasnât very strict. I know my French teacher was dating my mean history teacher. I never knew what she saw in him.â
âIf thereâs not a rule against teachers dating, then there must be another reason why Miss Morris was so secretive. Could it be that the other teacher was married? Were they having an affair?â
âThere is another possibility,â said Amy. âI donât like the way Miss Holly kept pointing out Miss Morrisâs age like she was ancient. She probably thought we were old ladies too.â
âPerish the thought,â Heather teased.
âBut Miss Morris does seem a little older than the male teachers at the school. Maybe they were keeping it a secret because they found the age difference embarrassing.â
âYou could be on to something,â Heather agreed. âBut I guess the only way to determine it is to start talking with the male teachers. Who do you think we should start with first?â
âWell, if I were going to have an affair â and Iâm not really saying I am because I am madly in love with Jamie â but for this example, if I had to pick â well, Mr. Grant is pretty darn attractive. Wavy hair. Broad shoulders.â
âLetâs go talk to him,â said Heather.
âYes. Letâs,â Amy said with a wink.
They continued down the hall until they reached Mr. Grantâs classroom. His room was covered with maps and flags. He looked up from the pile of papers he was marking with a red pen and waved.
âI was just trying to be productive in the face of all this sorrow,â he said. âI like to give a quiz the first day and last day of class with the same questions so students can see how much theyâve learned throughout the year.â
âDo you mind if we ask you some more questions?â asked Heather.
âNot at all,â he said, though his charming smile didnât reach his eyes as he invited them to sit down. âBut I think I really did tell you everything I knew last night.â
âWeâve found out some more information, and we were hoping you might be able to add to it,â said Heather.
âWhat sort of information?â he asked, trying to sound casual.
âAbout the victim,â said Heather, matching his tone.
âYeah,â said Amy. âHow well did you know Miss Morris?â
âWell, weâve worked together for several years. Weâd always chat during lunch. She was a very nice lady. She made cookies for us at Christmas. I jumpstarted her car for her before.â
âIs that all you ever jumpstarted?â asked Amy.
âExcuse me?â asked Mr. Grant.
